Recently, there’s been a lot of attention on the health benefits of CBD for humans. The CBD treatment trend has entered the pet wellness market as well, with a large number of CBD oil products and treats for dogs.
At East Valley Animal Hospital in Gilbert and Mesa, we want dog parents to have all the knowledge they need to make an informed decision before they start using CBD for their dogs. Let’s take a closer look at the risks and benefits of CBD treatments for dogs.
What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical found in the cannabis or hemp plant. Because CBD products contain only trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—the chemical that provides the “high” associated with marijuana use—there’s no potential for dependency.
The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 allowed the production of CBD products to become more commonplace. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved any CBD products for use in animals. Each state has its own definition of which CBD products are legal. In Arizona, CBD products may contain no more than 0.3% THC.
How can CBD help my dog?
If you’ve been considering CBD oil for your dog, you’re not alone. A recent survey found 48% of U.S. pet owners purchase CBD treats for their pets, and 27% buy CBD oil for their furry companions.
CBD may help to treat several conditions in dogs, including anxiety, arthritis, and epilepsy.
However, it is important to note that veterinary studies of CBD usage in dogs and other animals are still in their early stages. Research has only just begun, and there are still many questions to answer concerning the dosage, safety, and effectiveness of CBD oil in dogs.
Anxiety
Research shows CBD can help with anxiety management in humans, and some believe the same results are possible for dogs. A study of almost 100 dogs given a CBD treat for 14 days showed improvements in their anxiety levels.
Arthritis
As in humans, there is a lot of interest in using CBD for dogs with arthritis as a treatment option. One recent study found CBD effective in improving mobility and quality of life in dogs with canine osteoarthritis.
Epilepsy
Researchers believe that the anticonvulsant properties of CBD could help reduce seizures in dogs with epilepsy. A 2019 clinical trial showed 89% of epileptic dogs who received CBD treatments experienced fewer seizures.
Are there any risks in using CBD for dogs?
If you decide to give your dog a cannabidiol treat or a massage with CBD oil, there are several potential side effects. Risks can include:
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth and increased thirst
- Decrease in blood pressure
- Dizziness
- Itchiness
- Upset stomach and/or vomiting
- Diarrhea
