If you grew up with a doggo around the house, you know how special it can be to share your home with a four-legged family member. As we all know, dogs make incredible companions because of their loyalty and affectionate nature. When you’re considering getting a new family dog, you want to take a few things into consideration. In particular, it’s important to think through a breed’s temperament, size, energy level and trainability when deciding which would be the perfect fit for your family with kids. Here are just a few of our favorites!

Large Family-Friendly Breeds

1. Labrador Retriever

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Labrador Retrievers have been the most popular dog breed in the United States for 25 straight years! Labs are friendly, outgoing and high-spirited, making them great family dogs. Males weigh-in around 65 to 80lbs and females can weigh between 55-70lbs. Since Labrador Retrievers are eager to please, they tend to be easy to train.

2. Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers have also made a consistent top 5 appearance in the AKC top breeds poll for the past several years. They are intelligent, devoted and very energetic dogs. They only tend to bark when necessary which makes them great for a family who doesn’t want the extra noise around the house. Males weigh between 65-75lbs and females weigh 55-65 pounds.

3. Bernese Mountain Dog

These gentle giants appear intimidating but are really just big teddy bears. Their 100lb frames may cause some families to go in a different direction, but if you are a big dog lover you can’t find a sweeter with children.

4. Collie

Collies are faithful, loving and hard-working dogs. They are extremely active and require a lot of exercise. They respond well to training and like nothing more than to make their humans happy. They are a perfect medium-sized dog–weighing up to 75lbs–that is fun for the whole family.

Small Family-Friendly Breeds

1. Bulldog

Bulldogs are an excellent choice for a family dog because they are sturdy, loyal and adaptable, which means they can put up with pretty much anything that is thrown at them. While they require moderate exercise, they are great for a family who doesn’t have endless hours to walk and play with their dog. Male Bulldogs can weigh up to 50lbs and females up to 40lbs.

2. Beagle

Beagles are compact, friendly and curious dogs that are great with children. They are quite energetic and will definitely be able to keep up with your kids. If you don’t mind a bit of howling and weekly grooming sessions, then you’ll love the companionship a beagle has to offer.

3. Pug

Those quirky, scrunched-up faces are just too lovable. Pugs are even-tempered, loving and appreciate a good play session with the kids. Their small frame only requires moderate energy which makes them great for families that live in a small home or apartment.

4. Mutt

We’ve saved the best for last. Mutts are our absolute favorite family-friendly breeds. One of the reasons we love this mixed breed is because they are commonly found at shelters in need of loving homes. These pups tend to combine the best traits of two or more dog breeds and are extremely lovable because of their uniqueness.
